Only twice

In over 30 years of watch collection only twice: a lady at the grocery store register thought that my UN Jungle repeater is a Disney watch and few years ago a gentleman recognized and commented on my UN Aqua perpetual. Other than that no one ever notices my watches.

Verbal compliments on your watches

 By: @wewannaporsche : January 22nd, 2024-14:13
I know a lot of folks here in this forum have some very heavy hitter expensive watches, so thought it would be fun to hear about stories where you’ve gotten random comments from strangers or friends/family/dates on your watches. The only watch I’ve ever g...

Almost never happens, and I'm grateful.

Once with a Reverso. Once with a JLC Master Compressor Chrono (only because it looks so oddly cool). And maybe a few times with a Sub and the same with a Speedy Pro. That's over 30+ years of wearing. But frankly I'm grateful not to have the attention. How...

Thanks

Thanks for sharing that and yeah, I also welcome it when there is a true Watch enthusiast who really wants to talk to you about watches.

Only twice

Once while shopping with my wife a sales clerk was staring intently

at my Submariner and I saw him mouth the words "yeah, it's real". I don't go around flashing my watches, I wear them and if someone sees one they see it. Another watch I have that gets commented on is my Bell & Ross pilot's watch.

Only once really.

I used to have an Omega Constellation and another customer at a coffee shop said I like your Omega. We chatted about it for a few minutes afterwards. Of course, salespeople at watch places love every watch you have on but we know that doesn’t really count...

I received a lot of compliments for my ex Blancpain Leman Chrono perpetual in white gold, blue dial. Yes, a lot. For my Duometre Chrono WG, too. And for my Rolex GMT MASTER 6542.

 By: amanico : January 22nd, 2024-16:01
Not so much for the others. But honestly, it is cool when you receive compliments, but I don't care if I don't. I know what I have, and that's the most important. Best, Nicolas

Wow, I’m surprised

 By: @wewannaporsche : January 22nd, 2024-16:06
That you got compliments on your Blancpain and JLC. Even though they are great watches, most I would think wouldn’t know the brands. I’m not surprised about the GMT though. Seems everyone recognizes a Rolex.

Yes, perhaps it’s the interesting dials

 By: @wewannaporsche : January 22nd, 2024-16:27
That attracted the attention, or he hangs out with watch aficionados. 😆

It was bad

 By: blau : January 22nd, 2024-16:03
Many years ago, I had a VERY strong feeling that I was "not a Rolex guy" and that I wanted nothing to do with all that Rolex hype, etc. etc. I nonetheless got sucked in by vintage Rolex excellence and acquired a 16750, matte dial, pepsi bezel, jubilee bra...

Haha, I felt the same way

Which is why I sold my Daytona and GMT. I regret selling the Daytona not because I liked the watch so much but because it went up so much in value.

Here's what I figure about that kind of regret:

 By: blau : January 22nd, 2024-16:38
Suppose, like in this case with the GMT, that I sold the watch for X number of dollars, deciding that I'd rather have X dollars than the watch. Today (as a matter of fact) it's worth 3X. I didn't really miss out on that whole value increase, since if I ha...

That’s a good way to think about it.

 By: @wewannaporsche : January 22nd, 2024-16:59
I also sold my Daytona at 3X less than what it is worth now. Guess I shouldn’t feel regret cause I grew tired of it and would’ve sold it anyway. If offered it now, I still wouldn’t get one.

Exactly! Nothing to regret there.

 By: blau : January 22nd, 2024-17:12
Interesting when I think about it to realize that rising prices have given me a lot of, "I wish I'd bought it" regrets but no major "I wish I hadn't sold it" regrets.

I feel better now, thanks. 😆

Happened twice.

Last year during breakfast in a hotel a gentleman wearing a Breguet Marine big date complimented my Cartier Santos while exiting the restaurant. And once at a party when someone noticed my Rolex Cellini and asked if it was real. (Not really a compliment.)...

I've gotten comments on the series 1974 a few times. Also UG tri-compax

I think…

 By: Derreck : January 22nd, 2024-17:37
many people notice, especially if you are wearing Rolex Cartier AP etc, but very few comment on it, people have a hard time acknowledging other people generally. But other than known brands which people instantly recognize, if the piece is not flashy enou...

Haha, thanks! 🤣

Most often I get compliments for my very restrained watches.

 By: Figij005 : January 22nd, 2024-20:07
Especially the Nomos Tangente gets comments (perhaps because I live in Germany) and the stealthy Ming 17.09 because of the deep blue dial and the modern 'tron'-like look. The nicest things happen when you comment on nice watches on other peoples wrists. I...

Thanks, that Ming is pretty cool.

Very seldom

 By: watch-guy.com : January 22nd, 2024-22:31
Sometimes if I wear a vintage piece , someone might comment on the design But mostly people have no idea I once wore a rectangular vintage pp ( 1593) and some commented it looked one their frank muller !! J

ROFL!!!!

basically never, which suits me, but I don't get out much :-)

I too find myself wearing the Leman FB - it's such a well designed, easy wearing unostentatious watch. However, my grown daughter who is far more beautiful than any of my watches had this happen. My Breguet 3500BA will be hers one day, which she knows wel...

That is a great watch that Breguet

She has terrific taste in watches! 😁 And yeah, that’s what’s great about the BP…no one knows what it is.

My Urwerk 105-CT

 By: Jay (Eire) : January 23rd, 2024-00:00
It has attracted several comments in the 5 or so years I’ve owned it. Three times in random situations from folks that knew exactly what it was, all in NYC so maybe not surprising. And maybe three or four other times by curious non watch people, one of wh...

Wow, I’ve never seen that before

 By: @wewannaporsche : January 23rd, 2024-01:12
I’d probably comment on it as well. It looks like a watch Predator would wear. 😁

Only once, I recall, many years ago,

on a flight where the couple next to me were attracted by my Glashute Panomatic Lunar. They were even asking where to purchase one,LOL

I rarely get comments; maybe on my Perpetuals

Honestly I go out mostly to buy food and at fish markets, specialty produce, etc everyone is busy, no time to chat. My civilian (non watch) friends don’t ask because I’ll talk their ears off or else they pull dead watches from their pockets, saying “can y...

My reverso duo..

A nurse was admiring it while extracting blood on my arm for a test. Sadly it was a he 😁 372 gets the most comments from non watch folks. Probably in awe that someone would actually wear a 47mm watch 😁

Two weekends ago,

 By: RabidManatee : January 23rd, 2024-20:56
was out for sushi and the guy next to me, wearing an an AP Offshore (sorry not sure which iteration) asked me about the vintage Omega I was wearing. A few months ago a sommelier commented on my Explorer and showed me his white dialed Explorer II (previous...

Once on my JLC MUT 34. The guy said: wow, a JLC, that's an amazing watchmaker! (not easy to read the logo on such a small watch, so was quite happy). He said his grand father had an Atmos! I showed him the movement through the caseback, he liked it The ot...

I’ve always admired JLCs

But haven’t acquired one yet. I need to!

The only complimentary remark on a watch I kept in my mind was from a street sex worker ....

Some thirty years ago, my first really fine watch was a Zenith Class 4 chronograph. On my way to university I had to pass a bar in front of which even in daytime sex workers would wait for customers. It was summer, and my watch was well visible with a sho...
