It depends on how many watches you already have

Apr 11, 2012,20:05 PM

Hi Aden

My personal preference is a Perpetual, or if one does not want to spend so much, an Annual Calendar.

There is something nice about not having to find time in the morning of the 1st day of each month, to make sure the date is correct.

I use a PP Annual with a bracelet as my every day watch. As a surgeon, I wash my hands after seeing each patient. If I used a leather strap, it would disintegrate very quickly.

Chonographs are technically more demanding, and there are different ways of building one.

Although I have a one, I never use this function, not even to time how long before my parking coupon expires.

I also have a Worldtime, but as I do not travel so much, I also do not use this function.

Of course, many of us will like to own Tourbillons and Minute Repeaters. An alarm does not interest me so much, but I am sure other people appreciate this type of complication.

I am not commenting on the beauty of 2 hand watches as your posting suggests you are looking for comments on complications.

What are you looking at, and having a great time doing so ?

What complication would you choose?

Hi all, as mentioned - with so many complications around, which one would you choose if you were picking a new watch to get? I'm leaning to perpetual calender. Any opinions?

I am more towards a friendly complication.

Alarm, GMT, World Time, or a sublime Minute Repeater, but not in the same league. Best, Nicolas

Hello Aden. Interesting question, in my case...

Hi Aden, I, too, am inclined to keep complications user-friendly. My criteria include (a) user friendliness, (b) practical usability and (c) aesthetic attractiveness. For my collection, "complexity for the sake of complexity" doesn't attract me (though I ...

Agree, simple is best

I would agree that a very fine example of time only is preferable--a fine independent for example. Not cheap, but neither is a perpetual. I also like a rugged, NON dressy chronograph such as the 7750 based varieties. A chrono, to me, should have 3 subdial...

One minute hand and one hour hand is about as complicated as I can cope with. Even a second hand is superfluous to requirements. Old Father Time is an excellent teacher when it comes to learning what is and what isn't important. All younger members should...

I like the sound of it

So if budget is not an issue My preferences would be: alarm, MR, GS. Best Damjan

I would also tend towards a perpetual calendar . . .

. . . as it's a truly useful complication. Most complications are of marginal utility at best, but perpetuals (and annuals) actually deliver useful information in a mechanically fascinating way. You're on the right track. Cordially, Art

Tourbillon w/Minute Repeater, or a Duometre

I think I might have to have a tourbillon with a minute repeater. Either that or a Duometre! - scott

I like chronographs because they fascinate me. Never mind that I hardly use the function. I hardly use my watch to tell time anyway. I usually rely on my cellphone for that. If I were in a meeting, it's more subtle to check the time by pretending to check...

In terms of pragmatism; probably a calendar, provided one does not have to keep re-setting, i.e it will have to be worn & wound daily. In terms of dreams: PP 3939 (MR) fnk
