Vintage 1945 running 5 minutes fast PER HOUR?!

Hey all,

I recently bought a pre-owned Girard Perregaux Vintage 1945 ref. 2593 off of the bay, that was listed as in good condition. When I received the watch it was running about 5 minutes fast PER HOUR! I have encountered watches running slightly slow or slightly fast but never like this! Do you know what could be the issue? The seller said the watch was fine when they sent it...I really like the watch but I do not want to have to pay to have it serviced as I just purchased! Any advice?

My guess

is that the watch took a shock, and the mainspring is hung up on itself, making it effectively shorter. If I am right, it is a 10 second fix once the back is off.

Or magnetized

Had this happen with my Royal Oak. An easy fix but definately a surprise.

Watch not meeting COSC standards.

I agree with mikemargolis; with the proviso it's the hairspring that's snagged i.e. that thin twirly thing that pulses as the balance vascillates. An easy fix if you know what you're doing: potentially eye wateringly expensive if you don't.
