When did Cartier start to use Synthetic Spinel in SS models?

Hello watch experts,

I am wondering if Cartier has always used the synthetic spinel for the crown jewel on stainless steel models (since their introduction with the Santos Galbee in the 70's), or if this a relatively recent phenomenon. Were the crown gems on the les must vermeil line also synthetic spinel or were they sapphires? Thanks in advance.
