First Week With Bvlgari’s Endurer Chronosprint
The first question asked when not seen in person, is regarding the watch’s size. While listed at 56mm, the case feels no larger than a 44mm Panerai. However, there will be moments when the crown makes its presence felt on the back of the hand. Overall, I find the watch to be just as comfortable as pieces down to 39mm. Being a former AP Royal Oak owner, I loved that look, but wanted something slightly larger. The Endurer came along at the perfect time. More refined and less played out, this strong design has many of the elements of an Offshore. Another watch I considered was Patek’s Nautilus, which I never quite fell in love with.
In comparison, the Bvlgari’s dial is lightly textured in a solid slate color as opposed to most of the Nautilus offering’s which have a color gradation. The wheels on the grande date 0’s feature “ROTH” and have a blue tint in certain light. Overall, I find the Endurer to ride the line between the Offshore and the Nautilus balancing sportiness and elegance into an every day watch.
The strap is a fine, comfortable alligator and a little wider than most straps. I prefer the nice taper of this band to the new AP Diver, which feels wide all the way around. The buckle is nothing special, and it would have been nice to see a little more design flair or a deployant at this price. As I mentioned before, Bvlgari’s standard medium strap puts me on the last hole or two, depending on the temperature. A longer strap is currently on order.
Of course the practicality of a chronograph function is questionable for the average person, but I find this simple implementation slightly more useful. For those unfamiliar with the Chronosprint feature, it runs constantly on a two-handed subdial while a single pusher resets both hands to 12. This is meant for timing longer spans, and I’ve found it handy also as a GMT function by resetting the subdial at different times relative to midnight.
I’d be lying if I didn’t mention that the uncommonness was a desirable factor in this purchase. I’ve run across the Offshore, Nautilus, Big Bang, and others on the streets here in Chicago, but don’t expect to see another Endurer around any time soon. In the watch world, quality is often relative to price, and its nice to see that, at this reasonable price-point, so is exclusivity(for the moment at least).
